Girls Out of School
Economic pressures and cultural barriers push adolescent girls out of classrooms and into vulnerable, high-risk socioeconomic and health situations.
We work with communities to eliminate barriers that prevent girls and women from achieving their full potential through health education, gender integration, skills development, economic empowerment, and community-led development.
Three interconnected crises preventing girls and women from reaching their potential.
Economic pressures and cultural barriers push adolescent girls out of classrooms and into vulnerable, high-risk socioeconomic and health situations.
Unaddressed gender and social norm barriers contribute to poor health-seeking behaviour and high rates of maternal mortality among women of reproductive age.
Potential global and national GDP is not achieved due to gender gaps in education and economic participation — losses that compound annually.
Potential unrealised. Unsustainable interventions. Communities left behind.

How we create lasting impact in communities.
Theory of Change Framework — LTI creates enabling environments for sustainable community transformation through evidence-based programming, gender-responsive approaches, and community-led development.
Our theory of change guides how we work with communities to create enabling environments for sustainable transformation. Through evidence-based social and behaviour change approaches, gender-responsive programming, and community-led development, we strengthen local systems, leadership, and collective action. We support communities to identify and drive their own solutions while addressing structural and social barriers to health, education, and economic opportunity.
Real stories of transformation from communities implementing the Women's Empowerment Group approach.
When her community was attacked in 2021, 23-year-old mother Hawa'u Daudu fled to the IDP Camp in Badau with her 16-month-old boy, Salim. Badau is a border community where Breakthrough ACTION-Nigeria carries out the WEG approach.
During a WEG meeting, Hauwa'u witnessed a food demonstration session showing how healthy meals can be made from locally available sources. A facilitator noticed Salim's small size and measured his arm with a MAUC tape, revealing severe malnourishment.
The WEG assisted me in bringing my child back to life. I now have a healthy child. With the knowledge I have, my family and I live a healthy life, and I can teach and support other women and children.
Hauwa'u returned to the IDP camp and taught women how to create nutritious meals using locally produced foods. Many children at the camp are now in good health.
In Ndegu Amainyima, women could not seek medical care without the husband's permission. This hesitancy led to avoidable complications and, sometimes, death.
Cynthia Ogali learned about joint spousal decision making in her WEG. She spoke to her husband, Sunday, about what she had learned. Sunday was quickly convinced that joint decision making would improve their family's health.
Before, I used to hesitate and worry about the costs. But now that my husband and I know that our children's health comes first, we can manage together.
Now, whenever the children are ill, Cynthia and Sunday consult with one another and visit a nearby health facility as soon as possible.
Iteshi Monica was a housewife entirely dependent on her husband. She possessed no income of her own. Her life changed when she enrolled in Star Women, a WEG in the Ekpelu ward.
After weeks of consistent savings, Monica secured a loan and opened an engine oil business. Her house stands on a major road where cars frequently need engine oil, and constant power outages mean generators require regular servicing.
Joining Star Women changed my life and gave me the tools to empower myself and others. I am now a proud business owner and lead WEG facilitator.
Monica has since established her own WEG called Peace WEG, empowering other women to make informed health decisions while providing access to monitored micro-savings and loans.
Nneka was a young woman full of hopes who tragically passed away while giving birth. Her sudden death left the community in shock. Upon learning of Nneka's death, Show the Light WEG came together to ensure the baby's well-being.
The WEG members collected contributions to support the child's financial needs. Ogodo Mercy, a member, stepped forward to become the baby's surrogate mother. Other members formed a support network around Mercy and the baby.
I am grateful for the WEG's support and for trusting me with this precious life. Together, we are giving this child the best possible start in life.
The child, now surrounded by a loving environment, is thriving and has become a cherished member of the community.
Nwaoba Clementina is a member of the Ward Development Committee in Ikwo LGA. She has always been passionate about women's empowerment in her community.
When the first WEG was established, Clementina was appointed as the lead facilitator. With her guidance, the group flourished. She led by example and encouraged other women to form their own groups.
Being part of the Women Empowerment Group has been a life-changing experience. Witnessing women supporting and uplifting each other has strengthened my belief in the power of collective action.
Clementina's leadership elevated the status of women in the community and inspired others to take charge and advocate for their rights.
